Overview
The CipherTrace data integration provides cryptocurrency and blockchain intelligence for a wide range of criminal investigations, including drugs and firearms illicit trafficking, terrorism finance, and white-collar crimes such as financial fraud and money laundering. Investigators and analysts can benefit by tracing and de-anonymizing cryptocurrency transactions, assessing risk, collecting evidence of forensic interest, and conducting deep analysis on cryptocurrency data.
With powerful and easy-to-use cryptocurrency tracing for investigators and researchers, the CipherTrace Maltego Transforms support the following cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash and Litecoin.
Investigators can access advanced CipherTrace Cryptocurrency Intelligence combining millions of attribution data points from open source and private intelligence into Maltego. CipherTrace leverages open and closed source blockchain attribution, as well as machine learning and multi-input clustering algorithms in order to visualize actionable intelligence and help comply with cryptocurrency regulations.

Use Case Examples
1. Organized Crime Investigations on the Dark Web
A cryptocurrency address used by dark web market vendor can easily become the starting point of an investigation with the CipherTrace integration. It is possible to discover wallets that a dark market vendor might own, which can then be used to retrieve additional cryptocurrency addresses and details, such as location and owner of the wallet. It is also possible to track buyers of illicit products or services, by tracing source and destination addresses of cryptocurrency transactions. The acquired intelligence can be utilized for strategic operations in fighting potential organized crime.
2. Investigating Criminal Networks Behind Websites
With the CipherTrace integration the discovery of cryptocurrency addresses on websites can provide clues for investigating criminal networks. Addresses can be extracted and utilized for tracking down ‘tainted’ transactions based on the Risk Score along with their source addresses and eventually attributing them to criminal Entities.
3. Tracking Money Laundering and Terrorism Finance
A common technique used by criminals and terrorists, is utilizing mixing services in order to cover the trails of transactions conducted with “tainted” funds. Mixing services(aka Tumblers or Foggers), are used for improving the anonymity and privacy of legitimate cryptocurrency users. This is achieved by mixing different currency streams, granting the transactions harder to trace back to their origin address. However, these services can also be abused for masking illicit and criminal activities.
CipherTrace Transforms can be used to expose such activities by providing the ability to trace the source and destination addresses of cryptocurrency transactions and attributing risk scores to them.
Risk Score Classification Levels
CipherTrace assigns a Risk Score to addresses and transactions using proprietary technology. The table below lists all of the possible risk score values that can be attributed to an Entity, when using the CipherTrace risk score assessment Transforms.
Risk Score | Description |
---|---|
0 | No attribution exists for this address, the address has no transactions, or this is a new address for which CipherTrace is still in the process of calculating its risk classification (in this situation, the updated risk classification should appear within a few hours) |
1 | No transactions with any level 9 or 10 addresses within one hop |
2 | This address is controlled by a trusted exchange that has not been labelled ‘High Risk Exchange’ and that has transacted with level 9 or 10 addresses one or more times within one hop. |
4 | This address has transacted with a level 9 address once within one hop. Does not propagate further. |
5 | This address has transacted with a level 10 address once within one hop. Does not propagate further. |
8 | This address has transacted with level 9 addresses two or more times, or with a level 10 address once and level 9 addresses one or more times, within one hop. Does not propagate further. |
9 | This address has transacted with level 10 addresses two or more times within one hop. |
10 | Attribution data exists for this address that attributes it to a sanctioned entity or labels it as Criminal, Dark Market, Gambling, Malware, Ransomware, or Mixer. |
Reference Content
CipherTrace Transforms operate at three levels
- Cryptocurrency addresses
- Cryptocurrency transactions
- Cryptocurrency wallets
This section will go through basic knowledge for each of those cryptocurrency Entities.
Cryptocurrency Address
A cryptocurrency address is a unique identifier which is used as a location reference to where money will be sent or received. A cryptocurrency address cannot store funds.
Addresses are produced from wallet public keys, with an one-way cryptographic hashing.
Cryptocurrency Transaction
A blockchain transaction consists of an input and an output.
When a cryptocurrency address(address A) sends funds to another cryptocurrency address(address B), address A sends an output and address B receives an input.
This transaction is logged on the blockchain and can be uniquely identified, by the transaction ID.
Cryptocurrency Wallet
A cryptocurrency wallet is an electronic wallet identifiable by a unique ID, which can store a specific cryptocurrency.
Wallets are systems which control a users funds, and manage cryptographic keys and originating addresses.
Transform Input Parameters
The CipherTrace Transforms accept a variation of the following input settings:
CipherTrace Authorization
The CipherTrace integration requires an API key in order to execute Transforms. For more information on how to obtain an API key, please refer to CipherTrace. All CipherTrace Transforms require an API Key.
Timeout
The timeout parameter defines the duration of wait time for a response from the API when executing a Transform. The number may need to be increased if working with large number of results (Number of Results slider set over 256).
Date Range
Some Transforms use a specified start and end date as a search filter. There are two options available, a fixed date range and a relative date range. The fixed date range allows the user to specify the start date and end date, while the relative date range includes presets which can be used to filter results, according to the set time period.
Pagination Index
CipherTrace Transform will return a maximum of 4000 result as a given time. It is possible to use the return pagination index to paginate through result sets. Currently only Wallet To Addresses support pagination.
CipherTrace Data Subscriptions
Maltego also offers the CipherTrace Data Subscriptions.
Maltego data subscriptions are a subscription-based model that allows investigators to purchase access to third-party data directly in the Maltego web-shop. The advantages of this model are that it allows users the flexibility of paying for data according to usage requirements, with multiple options for subscription duration and data quotas. For example, a user can purchase monthly or annual subscriptions.
When using CipherTrace Data Subscriptions, a number of Transforms are excluded from quota limiting. That means data subscription users can use select Transforms as much as they like without decreasing their available quota.
The full list of the unlimited Transforms is as follows:
- To Bitcoin Addresses [CipherTrace]
- To BitcoinCash Addresses [CipherTrace]
- To Ethereum Addresses [CipherTrace]
- To Ethereum Transactions [CipherTrace]
- To Litecoin Addresses [CipherTrace]
- To Inbound Transactions [CipherTrace]
- To Outbound Transactions [CipherTrace]

Description
The Address To Risk Score Transforms provide a risk score assessment for a cryptocurrency address, which is based on forensic data discovered on the blockchain by CipherTrace.
CipherTrace will label an address as potentially high-risk, when it discovers data suggesting that the address is directly associated with, or involved in illegal or high-risk interactions, or can be attributed to a sanctioned region or Entity. The data may also place the address in one of the following criminal activity categories: - Stolen coins - Malware and ransomware - Gambling sites - Ponzi schemes - Dark market activity.
The risk score is measured on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being the lowest risk score and 10 being the highest. It is displayed on the Detail View and the properties of an Entity.

Description
The Transaction To Risk Score provides a risk score assessment for a cryptocurrency transaction, which is based on forensic data discovered on the blockchain.
When executing the Transform, all of the involved addresses are researched. The risk score assigned to the transaction is the highest of all addresses involved.
CipherTrace will label an address as potentially high-risk, when it discovers data suggesting that the address is directly associated with, or involved in illegal or high-risk interactions, or can be attributed to a sanctioned region or Entity. The data may also place the address in one of the following criminal activity categories: - Money laundering mixers services (also known as tumblers or foggers) which can be utilized to disguise money laundering activities - Stolen coins - Malware and ransomware - Gambling sites - Ponzi schemes - Dark market activity.
The risk score is measured on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being the lowest risk score and 10 being the highest.
